NEW YORK – Scientists from NASA announced that they had solved the mystery of the “magic island” discovered on Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.

As reported by Science Alert, Tuesday (9/1/2023), the island, known as Xanadu, has a very different structure from other regions on Titan. Xanadu’s surface is flat and smooth, with few craters or other features.

This contrasts with other regions of Titan, which have a more bumpy and cratered surface.

Scientists initially thought that Xanadu might be the remains of a crater that had been filled with molten material. However, new research suggests that Xanadu is actually the result of more complex geological processes.

Scientists believe that Xanadu formed when the ice layers on Titan’s surface melted. This fluid then flows downwards, forming a depression beneath the surface.

These depressions are then filled with organic material, which makes the surface smooth and even.

This discovery provides new insight into Titan’s geology. Titan is the only moon in the solar system to have liquid oceans on its surface.

Research on Xanadu can help scientists understand how this ocean formed and evolved.

This discovery is one of the greatest achievements in Titan exploration. This shows that Titan is a complex world and full of mysteries. Scientists still have a lot to learn about this moon.
