NASA showed re-processed satellite images of Jupiter with incredible detail

It’s good when there are archives. New methods of image processing, plus, possibly, AI algorithms – and the result is an incredibly detailed picture, from the point of view of modern smartphone models shot hardly “on the potato”. Recently, space landscape enthusiasts have pleased NASA. The Agency uploaded incredible detail pictures of the sixth satellite of Jupiter, Europe, extracted from the archives of the late 90s of the last century and processed in a new way.

Image of the surface of Europe after a new processing of old images

About six years ago, NASA was already laying out newly processed images of the surface of Europe. Photos were taken by the Galileo spacecraft back in the 90s. These images have surfaced more than once in our news and on other sites. But compare the picture above – these are the newly processed Galileo images (they became available to the public yesterday) and the past image (below). The difference in detail is enormous.

Original photographs of the surface of Europe were obtained using the Galileo apparatus using near-infrared, violet and green filters. Then the images were superimposed and processed. The “white spots” were painted by the artist or the program, so where without it? But in general, this does not negate the fact that we can become more familiar with the relief of Europe. Definitely, this will come in handy in future Europa Clipper missions to find signs of life on this satellite of Jupiter.

Europe seems to be one of the promising objects in the solar system for the search for extraterrestrial life. Emissions of water vapor were observed on the surface of the satellite. It is assumed that under the many-kilometer shell of ice, a relatively warm ocean splashes. And where there is water, there can be life, even in the form of microorganisms. In 3-5 years, a spacecraft will be sent to Europe to study this celestial body. New detailed satellite imagery can help plan future missions. Finally, it is just beautiful.
