NASA Scientists Solve 60-Year Solar Flare Mystery

The Mystery of the Sun Flare / NASA

JAKARTA, kilat.com- Within a few minutes, sun flare can release enough energy to power the entire world for more than 20,000 years. These flares are triggered by a process called magnetic reconnection, a phenomenon that scientists have been trying to understand for more than half a century.

Fully understanding can provide outlook new information about nuclear fusion and will also help provide better predictions for solar particle storms that could affect technology on Earth.

Now scientists with NASA’s Multiscale Magnetosphere Mission (MMS) may have finally figured it out. They have developed a theory about how the most explosive type of magnetic reconnection up to the so-called fast magnetic reconnection can occur and how it happens at a consistent speed.

The scientists have published their research in an article entitled, “First principles theory of the degree of magnetic reconnection in magnetospheric and solar plasma,” in the journal Nature Communications Physics.

According to the new theory developed by them, fast reconnection was likely accelerated by Hall Effect. Hall Effect describes how a voltage difference is generated across a conductor when subjected to an applied magnetic field in a certain way. This phenomenon is used in many everyday technologies, including the sensors in your phone that know to turn off the screen when the lid is closed.

According to the theory, the charged particles in the plasma stop moving as a group during a fast magnetic reaction and start moving separately, giving rise to Hall Effect which leads to the creation of an energy vacuum. The magnetic field around this energy vacuum exerts pressure on it, causing it to explode. It releases a large amount of energy at a predictable rate.

MMS will use four spacecraft flying around the Earth in a pyramid formation to test this theory. With this spacecraft, MMS can study magnetic reconnection in plasma at a higher resolution than is possible on Earth. (nda)
