NEW YORK – Mysterious asteroid Bennu, which NASA has kept secret for so long, will finally be exhibited to the public in the near future. The United States space agency has reportedly broken the seal on its metal storage tube.
As reported by Mashable, Sunday (21/1/2024), previously the asteroid was stored in Building 31 at the Johnson Space Center and was strictly kept confidential. This is because no one knows for sure what the asteroid Bennu contains.
After spending months on research, scientists appear to consider the asteroid Bennu safe. Its specially designed storage metal tube, with limited equipment and access was finally officially opened.
NASA has captured images of most of the objects taken from the asteroid Bennu, a 1,600-foot-wide asteroid composed of large rocks and debris. On social media X, NASA announced that the asteroid Bennu was open to the public.
“Open! Open! And ready for close-up,” wrote NASA.
For your information, the asteroid Bennu is considered a very valuable gift from a mission called OSIRIS-REx (short for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security Regolith Explorer).
Asteroid Bennu, like many other asteroids, is a preserved time capsule of our ancient solar system. It’s about 4.5 billion years old, so this pristine rock could give scientists insight into how objects like planets formed, and how Earth got water.
The asteroid Bennu was taken using the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft in October 2020. More than three years later, the Bennu chunk is stored safely at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and can now be studied together by the world community.
