Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – According to a report, an asteroid has the potential to hit Earth in October 2024. The asteroid discovered in 2007 was named FT3.
The asteroid measures 314 meters. FT3 was said to be missing because it was only visible for 1.2 days before disappearing from NASA’s view.
NASA reported FT3 was too faint and was not visible when it disappeared. The asteroid was visible at 14 arc points for two days and made astronauts calculate its orbit and look for potential collisions with Earth.
NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies identified 89 potential impact impacts. One of them is on October 5, 2024, quoted IFL ScienceWednesday (3/1/2024).
IFL Science notes that there is nothing to worry about with this potential. Because the previous potential occurred in 2019, in the end nothing happened.
A NASA spokesperson explained that there is no known future threat from asteroids to Earth. However, his party continues to observe and track near-Earth objects.
“There is no threat of an asteroid impact on Earth in the next century. NASA and its partners frequently observe the sky to find, track and categorize asteroids and near-Earth objects, including those that may approach Earth,” said the NASA spokesperson.
He also added that the closest distance to Earth is 30 million miles. The larger the size, the easier it is to find it.
“The bigger an asteroid, the easier it is for experts to find, meaning it has the same orbit around the Sun and is usually well known and has been understood for many years,” he said.
