NASA recently released a new image of “Supernova SN1987A” taken by the Webb Space Telescope. This supernova is 168,000 light-years away from Earth. It was first discovered in 1987 and is one of the most famous supernovae currently known.
The image captured by the Webb Space Telescope this time is also the clearest so far. It was taken in September 2022 and was not officially released until last week. It can be seen that the center of the structure is like a keyhole. Because the density of gas and dust erupted by the explosion is very high, the center cannot be penetrated and appears like a dark hole.
Outside the keyhole is the surrounding equatorial ring, which is formed by the material ejected tens of thousands of years before the star exploded into a supernova. Finally, there is the outer crescent-shaped structure newly discovered by the Webb Space Telescope. The crescent-shaped structure is considered by NASA to be a supernova. Part of the outer layer of gas ejected by an explosion.
