Technologue.id, Jakarta – The United States space agency, NASA regained contact with its Mars helicopter, Ingenuity on Saturday or two days after losing communication. The loss of contact began when the vehicle got off its latest flight.
The loss of contact with its companion, the Perseverance rover, occurred on Thursday during Flight 72, which the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) described as a “fast pop-up vertical flight to check the helicopter’s systems”.

Flight 72 was meant to check if everything was OK after Flight 71 suddenly experienced problems. During Flight 72, the vehicle flew up to a height of 12 meters (39.4 ft) and back down. The entire process lasted more than 32 seconds, before communication was lost.
JPL announced Saturday that Perseverance, which is tasked with relaying data between operators on Earth and the helicopter, had re-established contact with Ingenuity after “conducting an extended listening session” looking for signals from the helicopter.
“The team is reviewing new data to better understand the unexpected loss of communications during Flight 72,” JPL added.

Perseverance and Ingenuity arrived on Mars in February 2021. This rotorcraft achievement is very important because it is the first autonomous motorized vehicle and the first helicopter to fly on a planet other than Earth.
NASA launched this mission on the Red Planet to “search for signs of ancient life and collect rock and regolith samples (rock fragments and dust) that could possibly be returned to Earth.”
