The NASA space agency received a signal from the Voyager 2 spacecraft, with which it accidentally lost contact on July 21. His journey has been going on for 46 years.
Communications with the iconic spacecraft, which was launched in 1977 and is now about 19.9 billion kilometers from Earth, was cut off after NASA “inadvertently” sent it a false command. IN agency told the details.
NASA said contact should be resumed in October, when Voyager 2 reorients itself as part of a routine maneuver. But now there is hope that communication can be restored much faster.
During its regular scan of the sky, NASA was able to receive a signal – described as “a little like the heartbeat of the spacecraft” – from Voyager 2, confirming that the spacecraft was still operating.
Now engineers plan to send a command to Voyager 2 to try to get it to point its antenna back to Earth. “If that doesn’t work, we’ll have to wait until October, when the spacecraft’s onboard software will automatically tell it to change direction,” NASA said.
Commenting on the unfolding situation, Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager, said: “We’re hearing a ‘heartbeat’ signal from the spacecraft. So we know the spacecraft is alive and working. That’s lifted our spirits.”
