KlikBabel.com – NASA officially begins the final assembly of a spacecraft called Psyche. The aircraft will explore an asteroid that has a similar designation worth US $ 10 trillion or Rp. 145.21 trillion.

The space agency shared images and videos of the aircraft compiled from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California.

The process will take a year before it is shipped to Cape Canaveral in Florida for launch, which is scheduled for August 2022.

The announcement follows the delivery of the Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) chassis to the laboratory, which is a key component of the spacecraft.

The van-sized structure has an antenna high-gain two meters wide, a large frame that can accommodate scientific instruments, and a red protective cover to protect sensitive components.

Assembly began on March 16, when engineers examined subsystems, flight computers, communications systems and low-power distribution systems to make sure they were all working properly.

With the arrival of the chassis in the laboratory, the remaining hardware can be tested and installed. The chassis itself is the internal framework on which the spacecraft is produced.

“It’s great to see all the components coming together. But this is also a very intense phase. It’s a complex assembly and if one activity has a problem it can affect the whole process,” said Henry Stone, Project Manager for Psyche at JPL. Independent, Monday (5/4/2021).

After assembly is complete, the spacecraft must be transferred to JPL’s large thermal vacuum to be tested in space-like conditions.

The plane will travel about 179.5 million kilometers to reach the asteroid, examining its magnetic field and the neutrons and gamma rays radiating from the surface.

If all goes well, the spacecraft will launch in 2022, flight will cross Mars in 2023, and reach asteroid orbit in early 2026.

According to NASA the spacecraft is scheduled to spend 21 months there collecting data about the space rock.

Asteroid Psyche is one of the most massive asteroids, contains about one percent of the mass of the asteroid belt, and is more than 200 kilometers in diameter.

Psyche is considered to be an open protoplanetary core and the most massive type of metal-rich M-type asteroid.

These rocks are believed to explain the history of other planets because of their similarity to the Earth’s core and have a value of 10,000 times more than the 2019 global economy.
