Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Various places in the world are predicted to experience flood severe due to rising sea levels. NASA predict this because of the “wobble” in the orbit month along with rising sea levels due to climate change.
New study from NASA and the University of Hawaii, which has just been published in the journal Nature Climate Change, warns that changes that come in the moon’s orbit could cause a record flood on Earth, in the next decade.
By mapping the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) sea level rise scenarios, flood thresholds and astronomical cycles, the researchers predict flooding in American coastal cities could be some worse in the 2030s, when the next lunar “wobble” begins.
Scientists also predict that flooding will significantly damage infrastructure and displace communities.
This research highlights the dire situation coastal cities may face. However, the “wobble” of the moon is a natural occurrence. This incident was first reported in 1728.
The moon’s orbit is known to be responsible for periods of higher and lower tides, but it’s not dangerous.
“In half of the Moon’s 18.6-year cycle, Earth’s regular daily tides are suppressed: high tides are lower than normal and tides are higher than usual,” said NASA, quoted from CBS News, Monday (19/7/2021).
