NASA Plans to Investigate UFOs in New Independent Study | Science

NASA, the US space agency, announced on Thursday that it plans to investigate the origins of “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” (UAPs) in a new investigative effort starting next semester.

According to the space agency, the mission will focus on data analysis already availablein the evaluation of a better way of collect future data and in a calculation of how NASA might use this information to advance the scientific community’s understanding of the topic.

“We have access to a wide range of observations of Earth from space – and that is the lifeblood of scientific inquiry. We have the tools and a team that can help us improve our understanding of the unknown. It’s science. That’s what we do,” said NASA Science Mission Director Thomas Zurbuchen.

Still according to the agency, currently, we have no supporting evidence that these phenomena are of extraterrestrial origin.

Despite this, NASA considers that these UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects, the most popular name for the phenomenon) are both of interest to the national security of the United States and to the country’s air safety, as one of the fears of the American government is that these objects are actually from some US military rival, such as China and Russia.

Last year, as shown by the g1the Pentagon, the US military, released a report citing the observation of more than 140 unidentified flying objects. After that, last May, the American Congress even held a meeting on the subject.

The NASA study team, however, will be independent and not linked to the work of the Pentagon. The agency said the research effort will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, who was chairman of the astrophysics department at Princeton University.

“Given the paucity of observations, our first task is simply to gather the most robust set of data we can,” Spergel said. “We will be identifying what data – from civilians, government, nonprofits, businesses – exists, what else we should be trying to collect, and how best to analyze it.”

NASA expects the study to take about nine months to complete. According to the agency, all data must be published and made available to the public.

“We take this obligation seriously, and we will make them easily accessible for anyone to see or study,” said Daniel Evans, who was charged with NASA to coordinate the study.
