SPACE — On December 12, 1967, NASA launched the Pioneer 8 spacecraft on a mission to study the sun. Pioneer 8 is the third in a series of NASA satellites orbiting the sun.
A number of satellites were launched for
observing what happens on the sun, such as the solar wind, the sun’s magnetic field, and cosmic rays, or high-energy particles from outside the solar system.
The Pioneer mission provides the world’s first network of satellites that can monitor space weather and solar storms. These storms are important to study because not only do they bring amazing auroras to Earth, but they can also cause several problems.
Space weather events can disrupt satellite communications systems on Earth and even damage power grids. Source: Space.com
