A strange ‘zebra rock’ has been spotted by NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover on the planet Mars. This unusual rock is just the latest in a series of interesting rocks found recently.
Black-and-white striped rock found in Mars’ Jezero Crater is unlike any rock seen on the Red Planet before, with NASA saying it could be a sign of exciting discoveries to come.
The rover captured images of the black-and-white striped rock earlier this month. NASA scientists acquired the images on Sept. 13, after Perseverance had already left the area, according to the release.
Team members spotted the rock “with features of unusual texture” in low-resolution images while browsing a spot with no noticeable structure.
Upon closer examination, they measured the striated stone to be about 20cm wide and named it ‘Freya Castle’.

“This data was revealed a few days later, after the Rover had already left the area. Then, it became clear how unusual it was!” NASA scientists said.
Early interpretations suggest that the melting, movement, and cooling of magma and lava may have created the rock striations, as igneous rocks form when hot, molten rock crystallizes and solidifies.
One possibility is that the rock may have flown from further into the crater. “This possibility has us excited,” NASA officials said.
“We hope that as we continue to investigate, Perseverance will encounter another piece of this new type of rock so that more detailed measurements can be obtained,” they added.
