NASA Mission Discovers Water on Asteroids, Providing Insight into Solar System’s Birth

In a groundbreaking discovery, NASA has found water on the surface of two asteroids, shedding light on the birth of our solar system. The findings were made possible through data collected by the retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a joint project between NASA and the German Space Agency at DLR.

Previously, scientists had detected hydrogen on the asteroids but were unable to determine whether it was water or its chemical relative, hydroxyl. However, using data from SOFIA, researchers from the Southwest Research Institute were able to confirm the presence of water molecules on two of the four asteroids studied.

These specific asteroids, rich in silicate, a material containing silicon and oxygen, are believed to have formed close to the sun. By studying them, scientists hope to gain insights into how materials in space were distributed and evolved over time.

“Asteroids are leftovers from the planetary formation process, so their compositions vary depending on where they formed in the solar nebula,” explained Anicia Arredondo, lead author of the research paper published in the Planetary Science Journal.

The discovery of water molecules on these asteroids has significant implications. Not only does it provide clues about the origins of water on Earth, but it also offers insights into how water may be distributed in other solar systems. This knowledge could potentially guide future searches for extraterrestrial life.

Interestingly, water was also found on the surface of the moon. The amount of water detected is enough to fill a 12-ounce bottle and is chemically bound in minerals. Arredondo noted that the abundance of water found on the asteroids is consistent with what has been found on the moon, indicating that water can be bound to minerals or other materials.

This groundbreaking research is just the beginning. Arredondo and her team plan to expand their investigation into water on asteroids and other celestial bodies. They aim to study an additional 30 targets to further enhance our understanding of water distribution in the solar system.

To achieve this, the researchers will utilize the James Webb Space Telescope, a state-of-the-art instrument set to launch soon. With its advanced capabilities, the telescope will allow scientists to delve deeper into the mysteries of water in space.

The discovery of water on asteroids marks a significant milestone in our exploration of the solar system. It not only provides valuable insights into the formation of our own planet but also opens up new possibilities for finding water and potentially life beyond Earth.
