NASA Launches $3 Million LunaRecycle Challenge to Tackle Space Waste and Innovate Sustainable Solutions

NASA leaving a bit of a mess behind in space with his space missions. The space agency wants to do this better so they need innovative ideas to help them achieve this. The prize pool: $3 million.

Food packaging, experimental materials and clothing, NASA has to deal with everything during space missions. The idea is to recycle the waste, but the space agency doesn’t know how. That’s why the LunaRecycle Challenge was created.

The aim of the Challenge is to design and develop a sustainable solution. NASA divides LunaRecycle into two parts. On the one hand, for the design and development of hardware that can recycle several types of waste property. On the other hand, the group is looking for a digital simulation of a system that can start production from recycled materials.

So how does NASA do that?

With the International Space Station, NASA already knows how to keep people alive in space and so also what to do with the waste. The space station uses a high-temperature reactor that breaks down astronaut waste and turns it into water, oxygen and other supplies.

NASA says that such a method works up to an altitude of 2,000 kilometers. The space missions to the moon and future missions will go much further than that and thus cause a problem. If you have an idea and want a chance to win the amount of money, you can register here for the Challenge.
