The original plan was for NASA’s launch vehicle Space Launch System, SLS, to make its first flight six years ago. But the date has been moved forward several times. Now, however, the first prototype is about to be rolled out to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in the US state of Florida, tells The Verge.
SLS has been under development for the past decade and will make humans return to the moon for the first time since 1971. It is a large vessel, measuring just over 98 meters in height.
The first test flight will be part of the lunar program Artemis, and is therefore called Artemis 1. Nasa will then send an empty Orion capsule to the moon and back using SLS. If everything goes according to plan, this can happen within the next few months.
A manned journey comes later. NASA’s goal is for astronauts to be able to return to the moon during the second half of this decade.
