NASA has made available photos of the Sun taken by the Sun Dynamics Observatory (SDO) more

The American space agency NASA has published some photos of the Sun taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. This scientific satellite has been studying the dynamics of solar activity continuously since 2010. So far, SDO has orphaned 425 million photos of the Sun from orbit around the Earth, in high resolution, thus accumulating 20 million gigabytes of data over the past decade.

Information gathered with the help of the Solar Dynamics Observatory has enabled many new discoveries about how the Sun works and how it affects the solar system.

SDO records the image of the Sun every 0.75 seconds. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly alone captures images every 12 seconds at 10 different wavelengths of light. This 10-year collection of photos shows shots taken at 17.1 nanometer wavelength, which is the extreme ultraviolet wavelength. This allows observation of the outermost atmospheric layer of the Sun – the crown.

The video published by NASA shows the increase and decrease of activity occurring in the 11-year solar cycle and shows significant events such as planet transit and eruptions.
