SPACE — On March 31, 1962, the American Space Agency (NASA) approved the design for the new Gemini spacecraft. This small capsule can carry two astronauts into space at the same time.
NASA created the Gemini program to help the United States (US) prepare for the Apollo missions which would later send astronauts to the moon. The Gemini spacecraft was designed by Canadian engineer Jim Chamberlin and built by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation.
The design is a larger version of the capsule used by NASA for Project Mercury. Each Gemini capsule is shaped like a bell and measures about 19 feet long and 10 feet wide.
