Called TOI 700 e, its planetary system allows the presence of liquid water and is 100 light years away, in the constellation of Dorado
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) Nasa discovered a new planet that may be habitable. Called the TOI 700 e, it is 95% the size of the Terra and is probably rocky, however, it has a “habitable zone”, that is, some region in its planetary system allows the presence of liquid water. The discovery was presented on Tuesday, 10, at the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society, in Seattle. Previously, other astronomers had already discovered three other planets called TOI 700 b, c and d. The latter also had orbits in the habitable zone. “This is one of the few systems with multiple small, habitable-zone planets that we know of,” said Emily Gilbert, a postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, who led the work. “This makes the TOI 700 system an interesting prospect for further follow-up.” According to experts, planet “e” is approximately 10% smaller than planet d. Gilbert says this discovery shows how TESS helps find smaller and smaller worlds. TOI 700 “e” takes 28 days to orbit its star and is 100 light-years away in the constellation of Dorado. According to NASA, “Finding other systems with Earth-sized worlds in this region helps planetary scientists learn more about the history of our own solar system.”
