Polymele is about 27 kilometers in diameter and if the orbiting item were to be confirmed to be a satellite, it would be just one of the smallest moons at any time identified.
The moon was uncovered by the NASA staff that carried out the Lucy mission by sending a spacecraft to the edge of the solar technique to acquire data on a number of Trojan asteroids, which are two substantial rock clusters found in Jupiter’s orbit.
“On March 27, Lucy’s science staff found that the Trojan asteroid’s smallest target, Polymele, had its own satellite,” NASA said in a assertion.
When it was learned, the asteroid was facing a distant star, permitting scientists to accurately examine the dimension of the place rock involved. They observed the extent to which starlight was blocked by asteroids.
As they did, they saw a smaller sized look go above Polymele. The satellite rock and the central asteroid are about 200 kilometers apart.
