NASA Discovers Thousands of Alien Worlds in 4 Years

Sunday, January 30, 2022 – 10:03 WIB

VIVA – Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite or TESS operated by the Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA, until now it has been operating for four years and is used by scientists to find planet by involving the data.

The mission has just reached a major discovery milestone, finding 5,000 TESS Object of Interest or TOI including exoplanet candidates and other signals of interest.

For astronomer selecting objects from this TOI to study in more detail and collaborate with other instruments to better understand what TESS might have seen, according to the page Space, quoted Sunday 30 January 2022.

“TESS has found more than 2,400 TOI. Today, TESS has more than doubled that number. I’m excited to see thousands more in the years to come,” said one researcher, Michelle Kunimoto.

So far 176 TOIs have been confirmed as planets since TESS was launched in April 2018. The numbers are small because more observation time is needed to confirm candidate exoplanets.

TESS’s predecessor, the Kepler space telescope, for example, has more than 2,000 unconfirmed planet candidates, although observations have been completed since 2013.
