NASA Discovers Highest Concentrations of Organic Molecules on Mars – Potential Signs of Ancient Life and Habitability

Perseverance Mars rover NASA has detected the highest concentrations of organic molecules, indicating that the planet could potentially have had a habitable environment 3.5 billion years ago. This is a potential sign of ancient microbes and scientists will want to confirm when rock samples are finally brought to Earth.

The discovery was made in the Jezero Crater, which may have had a lake and a deep-emptying delta. While organic matter has been found in Planet Mars Previously, this new find looked very promising because it came from an area where sediment and salt were deposited into lakes, conditions in which life could emerge.

“It’s fair to say that this will be, it is, the most valuable rock sample ever collected,” David Shuster, one of the study’s authors, said scientist sample Perseverance returns, told reporters during a briefing. Curiosity’s X-ray diffraction lab analyzed the dust and detected tridymite, a rare type of quartz made entirely of silicon dioxide or silica. See infographic for details.
