Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia A team of astronomers from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite have discovered a number of super-Earth planets. The planets are said to be habitable, with different sizes from Earth.

One of them is 30% larger than Earth. This planet orbits its parent star for less than three days. The other planets are 70% larger than Earth. The planet is thought to have deep oceans.

“Both of these exoplanets are super-Earths or larger than Earth but smaller than ice giants such as Uranus and Neptune,” wrote space.com, quoted Friday (4/8/2023).

Most super-Earths, they say, orbit cool dwarf stars. This star has a smaller mass and lives longer than the Sun.

In outer space there are hundreds of dwarf stars for every star like the Sun. Super-Earths found orbit 40% of these dwarf stars.

“Using that number, astronomers estimate that there are tens of billions of Super-Earths in the habitable zone and have liquid, that’s just in the Milky Way. Since all life on Earth uses water, water is considered essential for habitability,” the team of astronomers said.

According to current projections, one-third of exoplanets are super-Earths. That makes it the most common exoplanet found in the Milky Way. The distance between Super Earth and the closest Earth is about 6 light years.

To detect the presence of exoplanets, the research team uses two methods. One is to look for the planet’s gravitational effect on its parent star. Another method is to look for the brief dimming of the star’s light when a planet passes in front of it.

The research team has also made the characteristics of habitable planets. “So the most habitable planet would have a mass roughly twice that of Earth and between 20 percent and 30 percent larger in volume,” they wrote.

The planet also has oceans shallow enough for light to stimulate life to the ocean floor. The average temperature is 77 degrees Fahrenheit or about 25 degrees Celsius.

The planet’s atmosphere is also reportedly thicker than Earth’s. This will serve as an insulating blanket.
