Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – NASA found traces of glacier-like ice flows on Mars. This shows signs of life on the red planet.
Water ice is an element that astronauts are looking for in outer space. In fact, the Chandrayaan-3 mission launched by India to the Moon also wants to find traces of water ice.
The discovery of water ice on Mars was caught by a NASA satellite orbiting the planet, named the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The satellite carries a sophisticated camera called High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE).
The HiRISE team says its camera is the most advanced in space today. Recently, HiRISE caught signals of ice flows taken from an altitude of 184 miles above the Martian surface.
“The surface of Mars holds examples of surfaces resembling glaciers. So far, water ice deposits are thought to be confined to the planet’s polar areas. However, slowly the flow can reach non-polar areas of Mars,” said Mike Mellon, Mars geologist and HiRISE co-investigator, quoted from MashableFriday (1/9/2023).
Mellon said the flow of ice from the poles to other areas of Mars could take up to thousands of years or longer. Even so, this network shows the historical pattern of water ice flow on Earth’s neighboring planet.
Frozen water deposits on Mars can be considered a ‘treasure treasure’, because it can be used to facilitate future space expeditions. The frozen water can be used as additional fuel and can be processed into oxygen.
However, further exploration is needed to explore this possibility.
