NASA Detects 2 Earthquakes on Mars, More Than 3 Magnitude

Suara.com – Lander InSight belongs to NASA in Mars detected two new earthquakes on the Red Planet, with strengths greater than magnitude 3.0.

The mission landed on Mars in November 2018 and its seismometer instruments began sensing Mars earthquakes.

The mission identified more than 500 earthquakes in Mars’s first year.

Previously, strong winds became an obstacle and prevented signal detection.

Now, the weather on Mars has changed and in March, InSight detected the two earthquakes.

“It’s great to be able to observe Mars earthquakes again after recording the wind for so long. Because we have eaten years on Mars, we are now much quicker to characterize seismic activity on the Red Planet,” said John Clinton, a seismologist who leads InSight’s Marsquake Service.

Reporting from Space.com, Tuesday (6/4/2021), two new earthquakes were detected on March 7 and 18 in an area called Cerberus Fossae.

It is the same area where the two largest earthquakes ever detected by InSight during the mission’s first year on Mars, suggesting that the area is very active.

According to NASA, the experts were particularly interested because the four earthquakes appeared to be a geophysical match.

“During the mission, we have seen two types of earthquakes on Mars, one more like earthquakes on the Moon and the other similar to Earth. Interestingly, these four large earthquakes originating from Cerberus Fossae are like earthquakes on Earth,” said Taichi Kawamura, a seismologist at the Institute. de Physique du Globe de Paris.
