NASA Delays Flight of Robot Helicopter on Mars

United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (National Aeronautics and Space Administration/NASA), Saturday (10/4), said it had postponed the first flight of its mini helicopter on Mars for several days, after a technical problem occurred while testing the propeller.

Ingenuity’s journey will be the first remotely controlled flight on another planet. The flight was originally scheduled for Sunday (11/4), but was delayed until April 14 at the earliest.

Friday’s 1.8-kilogram high-speed test of the helicopter’s blades ended earlier than expected due to warnings about possible problems.

“The helicopter team is currently reviewing telemetry to diagnose and understand the issue,” NASA said in a statement. “After that, they’ll reschedule the test at full speed.”

NASA said the helicopter was “safe and sound” and had sent information back to Earth. [vm/ft]
