NASA decided to send astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams home in February 2025
The United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) decided to bring home two astronauts trapped on the International Space Station in February 2025.
NASA announced on Saturday August 24 local time that two astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams who are stuck in space since June 2024 will have to wait until next year for a trip home.
“NASA has decided that Butch and Suni will return with Crew 9 in February and Starliner will return without a crew,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a press conference after conducting a readiness review reported on Sunday, Aug. 25 2024.
After weeks of debate, NASA chose to return the Starliner spacecraft without a crew
After weeks of debate, NASA has refused to return two astronauts to Earth in a Boeing Starliner capsule (spaceship).
Concerns include concerns about helium leaks and damaged thrusters, both of which are critical to a successful return.
“Space flight is dangerous, even under the safest and most normal conditions. Test flights are, by their very nature, unsafe and not routine. “The decision to keep Butch and Suni on the International Space Station and Starliner without bringing the Boeing crew home is a result of our commitment to safety: our core value and North Star,” Nelson said.
Why didn’t NASA immediately return two of its astronauts who were trapped in space?
Despite successful testing of the Starliner propulsion thrusters, detailed analysis, and confirmation that the known helium leaks in the propulsion system were stable and not depleting, NASA determined that there was no way to prove that the system would continue to work normally, making sure. deorbit safe, the two astronauts were able to re-enter and land.
According to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), deorbit refers to the decrease in orbital altitude of the spacecraft, also known as Decline.
Decline refers to a gradual decrease in the distance between two objects in orbit.
2 astronauts went into space to support research and testing of the Starliner system
The two astronauts reportedly flew out to the International Space Station in June aboard NASA’s Boeing crew test flight.
Wilmore and Williams were sent into space to support station monitoring, maintenance, Starliner system testing, and data analysis, etc.
