NASA confirms that a new solar cycle, Space Science, began in December 2019

Since the beginning of sunspot research, scientists have noticed that their activity is framed in 11-year cycles. Since the beginning of the observations in the middle of the 18th century, 24 such cycles have already taken place. NASA experts fromthat the 25th cycle started in December 2019.

It is no wonder that we did not notice it, because it is not possible with the naked eye.

“We continue to observe some tiny sunspots that have marked the beginning of a new cycle. These are the little forerunners of the huge solar fireworks of the future, ”commented researcher Frederick Klette.

Despite the fact that we have been following many cycles closely, it is still not clear what the mechanism is behind them. However, this is typical of the stars. In general, we see pulsating objects everywhere that become lighter or darker over time, and this usually happens at precise intervals.

The best way to observe changes in our solar cycles is to observe changes in its magnetic field caused by complex plasma currents inside the Sun. However, exactly what makes these currents flow in such a rhythmic way, scientists have yet to find out. It is possible that this is due to a similar rhythm in the orbits of the planets.

Although these cycles are usually 11 years long, they are only part of a larger 22-year cycle where the solar poles change places and then return. Observing these changes allows us to better anticipate cosmic weather, which is largely dictated by solar plasma and radiation entering space.

It will be another five years before we can say that the Sun is in its most aggressive phase, but the 25th cycle also promises to be visible.

“The fact that this is a less than moderately active solar cycle does not mean that there is no risk of extreme cosmic weather. The influence of the sun on our daily lives is real, ”said Dag Biseker.

This is more true of satellites, because here on Earth, which is protected by kilometers of atmospheric layers, the solar cycles are almost imperceptible. If you’re lucky, you might notice a slight change in the activity of the Northern Lights, but for the most part, you shouldn’t be particularly worried that the sun will negatively affect our lives in any way.

One thing is clear: the entry of the sun into a new cycle last December and the coronavirus pandemic could be metaphorically related.
