NASA Collaborates with Blue Origin Will Create a Gravitational Environment of the Moon on Earth

Suara.com – NASA in collaboration with Blue Origin to create an artificial gravitational environment that mimics gravity of the Moon on earth.

This effort was undertaken in preparation for future lunar exploration.

From 2022, Blue Origin will modify its New Shepard suborbital spacecraft to be like a large centrifugal machine in Earth orbit.

The inside of the spacecraft will be transformed into an experimental space that offers gravity like the Moon.

According to NASA, experiments that create conditions like those on the Moon typically require parabolic or centrifuge flights that are limited by their size.

Blue Origin will use its reaction control system to create the Moon’s gravity for at least two minutes at a time.

“NASA will soon have more options to test these innovations in lunar gravity thanks to collaboration with Blue Origin to bring new testing capabilities to the New Shepard spacecraft system,” NASA said. Space.com, Wednesday (17/3/2021).

NASA wants to simulate the Moon’s gravity in order to prepare for an actual mission to the Moon by astronauts in the near future via the Artemis program.

Some of the possible technologies to be tested could include mining the lunar regolith, surviving on water or other resources on the Moon, also known as in-situ resource utilization, and setting up environmental control and life support systems for astronauts.

Other companies wishing to participate can also join through NASA’s aviation opportunities program.

A specific number of technologies are selected each year for testing in one of several NASA-funded vehicle options.
