Now, the space agency has expanded its existing contract and gave each of them $5 million to design and develop new spacesuits.
NASA ordered space suits from Axiom Space that are intended for use in Low Earth Orbit, specifically for spacewalks outside the International Space Station.
The original contract for Axiom was for a spacewalking system that Artemis III astronauts would wear on the lunar surface when they landed on the moon.
Axiom launched a prototype for its original order in March, featuring a suit with joints that allow the wearer to move easily and a helmet equipped with a light and HD camera.
Meanwhile, Collins Aerospace received an order for a space suit also for use on the lunar surface. The company was previously contracted to develop spacesuits for the spacewalk outside the ISS.
“This task order positions NASA for success should additional capabilities become necessary or advantageous for NASA missions as the agency paves the way for deep space exploration and low Earth orbit commercialization,” Lara Kearney, manager of the Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program at Johnson Space NASA Center in Houston.

Both companies are developing astronaut suits for human missions to the moon. It is said that this redundancy effort is an important part of the development of space technology.
Spacesuits meant for the same purpose developed by two different companies can ensure that an astronaut will have something to fall back on if the other fails for whatever reason.
