The two astronauts lost on the International Space Station will return from space in February next year. The American space agency NASA announced this at a press conference.
At the beginning of this month it was already announced that the astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams could not until next year to return It is now clear that the two will be able to travel in a space capsule from the space company Space
Technical problems
NASA colleagues went to the space station in June with Boeing’s Starliner. They were supposed to stay there for about a week. However, technical problems prevented them from returning to Earth.
Many things went wrong when the space capsule was stopped by the space station. There were problems with the rockets that launched the capsule and helium was leaking. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the decision not to allow “Butch and Suni” to return on the Starliner was made for safety reasons. The spacecraft will return unmanned after additional tests.
SpaceX’s Crew 9 mission will fly to the ISS in September. The launch of that capsule was postponed from this month to next month, just because of the problems with the Starliner. The astronauts on the mission will stay on the space station for 180 days.
SpaceX’s capsule mission will now be carried out by two astronauts instead of four as originally planned. This will allow Wimore and Williams to return to Earth with their two colleagues in February 2025. It is not yet clear which of the two crew members Crew 9, consisting of three Americans and a Russian, will need give up their places.
