Many have had the dream of being able to conquer to the Moon and become a real flesh and blood Buzz Lightyear. That has been the dream vocation of many children that only a few have been able to fulfill. Now, at NASA he has done it again. He has again sent a few of his best men to carry out a space mission that had not been repeated for more than 50 years. And for the first time in history, now He has had one of his best women.
NASA has chosen four astronauts who are expected to undertake the Artemis II mission and will orbit the Moon in the next year 2024. They (and she) are: Christina Hammock Koch, Jeremy Hansen, Victor Glover y Reid Wisema.
This was announced by the government agency on Monday in a live broadcast in a massive event at the Johnson Space Center in Houston (USA) in which some more details of what will be the Artemis II mission aboard Orion were advanced; the one that constitutes the second trip to the Moon.
But what is really relevant about this mission, apart from the time that has passed since the last time such a space trip was carried out, is that, for the first time, there is a black man and a woman among the selected astronauts.
NASA astronauts who will travel to the Moon
Although it was already known that NASA was planning this space mission after so long, and it was also known that three of them would be Americans and one Canadian, the names of those chosen were not released until Monday.
These are the four NASA astronauts who will undertake the mission Artemis II:
Christina Hammock Koch
Everyone will make history on this lunar trip, but Koch’s role is especially significant as she is the first woman to travel to the Moon. Christina Hammock Koch is 44 years old and an electrical engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
She is one of the experts who visited the International Space Station in 2019, in the first spacewalk in which only women participated.
What will be your position in the mission? Koch will be one of the specialists.
Victor J. Glover
Glover, a Californian by birth and raised in Texas, will have the honor of being the first black man to orbit the Moon. At 46 years old, he has already completed more than 3,000 flight hours in more than forty different aircraft. In addition, he was a pilot on the first crewed SpaceX Crew-1 mission with NASA.
What will be your position in the mission? Victor J. Glover will be the pilot of Orion.
Gregory R. Wiseman
At 47, Reid Wiseman can boast of having worked on board the International Space Station as a flight engineer in 2014 and was also in command of the NEEMO21 underwater research mission.
What will be your position in the mission? Wiseman will be the proud commander of Artemis II.
Jeremy Hansen
47-year-old Canadian who joined the CSA Astronaut Corps in 2009. Before joining NASA he held the rank of captain in the Royal Canadian Air Force, flying fighter jets. It is his first mission in space, although before this he worked in astronaut training.
What will be your position in the mission? Hansen will be another of the specialists.
