SPACE — On January 5, 2005, astronomers at NASA discovered Eris, the second largest dwarf planet in the solar system. Eris is only slightly smaller than Pluto, and orbits the sun about three times farther than Pluto.
NASA first thought Eris was bigger than Pluto. They also originally described Eris as the tenth planet in the solar system.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU), however, is not too happy with the addition of Eris to the list of planets in the solar system. Instead, they decided to provide the first official definition of the word planet, and the new definition saw Eris and Pluto lose their planetary status.
