The spacecraft that NASA will send to the asteroid 16 Psyche, which is thought to have precious metals, was introduced to the press.
It was stated that the spacecraft, which shares the same name with the meteorite, is planned to be launched with SpaceX’s Heavy Falcon rocket in August and reach its target in 2026.
It was reported that the vehicle to be sent aims to shed light on how the Solar System and planets were formed. Experts also stated that the meteorite, which is about 200 kilometers wide, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, is the largest of the M-type asteroids.
VALUE OF 10 KENTLILLIONS
Unlike other asteroids formed by silicate rocks, it is thought to be composed of precious metals such as iron and nickel. Therefore, it is claimed that 16 Psyches are worth 10 quintillion dollars.
While the interest in the spacecraft kept in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California was intense, the space agency announced this week that it opened the vehicle to press members.
Brian Bone, Psyche’s director of assembly, test and launch operations, said:Inviting reporters to the clean room gives the public insight into the years and hard work spent on this mission.” said.
The mission’s principal investigator is Linda Elkins-Tanton of Arizona State University, “This meteorite may be part of the metal core of a minor planet from the early Solar System” he said.
