Well, this didn’t work… NASA accidentally cut communication with the Voyager 2 probe, which is currently about 24 billion kilometers away from our planet.
After the space agency in question sent Voyager 2 a “series of planned commands,” it realized that it included, among other things, a request to change the angle of the probe’s antenna to within 2 degrees of Earth.
As a result of this change, however, the control team lost Voyager 2’s ability to send commands (or receive them from it) and transmit data.
Fortunately, however, experts reckoned that this possibility could theoretically occur. The probe is therefore programmed to reorient and point the antenna back to Earth several times a year.
Another such reset is according to available information scheduled for Sunday, October 15. Once it does, NASA should be able to re-establish the lost connection.
“You may have heard it before… Voyager 2 is taking a break from sending data until October. Meanwhile, here I am, nearly 15 billion miles (24 billion km) from Earth and doing well!” the probe’s official Twitter account said.
