GRAMMY Award-winning rap icon Nas received the BMI Icon Award on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Los Angeles, California, during the annual BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The private ceremony honored the artist for his prolific songwriting, lyrical excellence, and three-decade-long career that fundamentally shaped the sound of modern hip-hop.

The private industry gathering brought together music executives, creators, and publishers to celebrate the genre’s most enduring talents. BMI CEO Mike O’Neill, Executive Vice President, Chief Revenue and Creative Officer Mike Steinberg, and Vice President of Creative in Atlanta, Catherine Brewton, hosted the evening. Beyond honoring the “King of New York,” the event recognized the songwriters, producers, and publishers behind the past year’s 35 most-performed R&B and hip-hop tracks.

Catherine Brewton highlighted the honoree’s enduring cultural footprint during the ceremony. “Nas has both defined and elevated hip-hop through his groundbreaking storytelling, lyrical excellence and a lasting commitment to artistic innovation,” Brewton stated according to BMI. She added that from his early beginnings to his current status as a media mogul, his legacy continues to inspire creators across generations.

Three Decades of Lyrical Innovation

Born Nasir Jones, the Queens-bred lyricist built a career defined by ingenuity and an uncompromising commitment to street-level authenticity. His 1994 debut studio album, Illmatic, remains a cornerstone of American music history.

Over the span of three decades, that foundational release evolved into a prolific catalog spanning 17 studio albums. According to industry tracking cited by BMI, the artist has earned multiple platinum certifications and sold more than 35 million records worldwide. Artists and producers across the entertainment industry frequently point to his phrasing and cadence as a primary influence on their own work.

Accepting the honor before a room of peers, the rapper turned his attention back to the creative community. “Every one of the artists who were appreciated tonight, I appreciate you more,” he expressed to fellow honorees.

Recognizing the Industry’s Creative Engines

While the spotlight focused heavily on the evening’s highest recipient, the program also turned its lens toward the unseen architects of modern audio production. BMI distributed accolades for the R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter, Song, Producer, and Publisher of the Year, alongside honors for the top-performing producers driving commercial radio and streaming charts.
