In several instances, HASI supported trips by JI officials, including senior JI leader Bambang Sukirno and JI operator Angga Dimas Pershada to Syria. One of HASI’s deployments to Syria occurred in May 2014.
JI has used HASI to raise funds. In 2013, HASI members participated in several fundraisers with JI in Indonesia. HASI can raise funds of up to tens of thousands of dollars. In addition, JI officials have encouraged their followers to provide material support for the fighting in Syria, including by making donations to HASI.
HASI also has ties to the Al-Nusrah Front for the People of Syria. Al-Nusra itself is part of the Al-Qaeda front.
