After more than a month without any Covid patient, the virus has manifested itself again for a little over ten days at Narbonne hospital. Eleven patients are hospitalized in medicine and two in intensive care. An increase in cases which is added to a maximum activity in summer.
As every year, during the summer, the activity in the emergency rooms of the Narbonne hospital is at its maximum: from bobology to more serious cases, whatever all patients must be taken care of.
So, with the resurgence of Covid cases over the past ten days, a certain weariness is added to the fatigue in the emergency department.
Admittedly, the progression of patients infected with the virus has nothing to do with that of February when we deplored in the hospital one death per day, but it seems inevitable.
About ten days ago, nine patients were treated in medicine and two in intensive care. Yesterday, the results were up slightly with eleven patients in medicine and still two cases in intensive care.
Ever younger patients
“Among these patients aged 40 … 50 and 78 years, only one person is vaccinated”, specifies the person in charge of the emergencies doctor Alain Péret.
The incidence rate of nearly 300 per 100,000 inhabitants indicates that the virus is still circulating. This new wave has undermined the optimism of the emergency physician who can only recognize a new rise in the epidemic.
It is obvious, given the age of the hospitalized patients, that the epidemic no longer affects or almost no longer affects octogenarians and nonagenarians as it was a few months ago, but rather a younger population which often is not vaccinated.
If a case of myocarditis in a young patient was observed after the injection of a first dose (read elsewhere), Doctor Alain Péret would like to recall that dozens of people have been vaccinated in Narbonne and that unfortunately only one case was observed.
“There is no such thing as drugs that are 100% effective. Women who take the pill can very well end up pregnant,” declares the doctor, understanding the distress of this family.
Still, it is important to remain vigilant and apply health measures because the virus does not, it seems, intend to take a vacation.
