Napoli’s Third Coach in One Year: Walter Mazzarri Takes Over

Napoli has its third coach in one calendar year. The reigning Italian champions surprisingly fell at home to Empoli on Sunday and it was a dernier for Rudi Garcia, with Walter Mazzarri taking over his duties.

Under Vesuvius at the end of last season they celebrated the championship Scudetto and a few weeks later they lost the architect of their success, Luciano Spalletti. Garcia previously managed Lyon, Marseille or AS Roma and signed a two-year contract at Napoli with an annual salary of 2.8 million euros.

The Italian league has completed twelve rounds, and Napoli is in fourth place, and has also entered the knockout phase of the Champions League. There was already speculation about García’s appeal during the fall, and the local press had been carrying information about his impending release since yesterday, and everything was officially confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. Even the coach himself, who left for his homeland on Monday morning, expected it.

The main favorite for the position of Napoli coach was Igor Tudor, the Croat was even supposed to agree on cooperation with the management until the end of the season. But in the end, nothing was signed and Mazzarri was given the trust. The 62-year-old helmsman is returning to a familiar environment, he started his coaching career as an assistant in Naples and led the first team between 2009 and 2013.
