Napoli’s players could have shared more than SEK 112 million.
But then the Champions League dream came crashing down after a 3-1 loss against Barcelona.
Completely even (1–1) it was on the board before the return.
Once in Barcelona, it was the home team who took command straight away and showed that they wanted to secure a promotion to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Because after a quarter of an hour, Fermín López Marín put the lead behind Alex Meret in Napoli’s goal. After that, it only took two minutes before Joao Cancelo made it 2-0.
Just before the break, Amir Rrahmani reduced and the Italians had several reasons to chase an equalizer after the break. Because the club president Aurelio De Laurentiis announced on television that he threw a fat bonus on the table if the players would advance.
Albin Ekdal’s reaction: “Bullshit”
More precisely, it should have been about ten million euros (corresponding to almost SEK 112 million). Among other things, because the team would then qualify for the cash-strapped Club World Cup.
– You know a lot, you… it’s more than ten million, said De Laurentiis himself in CBS Sports.
Albin Ekdal, with many years in Italy behind him, took it all with a grain of salt.
– I find it difficult to see De Laurentiis shelling out more than 10 million euros for a profit of one-eighth. They didn’t get anywhere near that when they won the league did they? Nonsense, he said in TV4’s studio.
The bonus doesn’t seem to have caught on at Napoli either. Because they never made it all the way, Barcelona instead secured Champions League promotion after Robert Lewandowski put the nail in the coffin to make it 3–1 and 4–2 on aggregate.
