Napoli has dominated in Europe up to now, what does that mean? “We are bringing beautiful football to Italy and Europe, we must continue like this. For Italian football, having a club like ours, but also like the others that participate in international competitions, is a beautiful thing. We hope it bodes well for everything the Italian movement”.
Do you find something from the group that won the European Championship in Naples? “This atmosphere hasn’t been lost after the European Championship. In Naples we’re doing something incredible, unexpected. No one expected our departure, but through work and a united group we’re taking away some great satisfaction. But we must continue like this , the championship is still long”.
Have you thought that you could become the captain of the third Scudetto? “It would really be a dream to win the Scudetto in Naples and win it as captain like Maradona. However, as I said before, the season is still long. We have made an important journey, but there are still many games to play. We have an important advantage, but with so many races ahead, it’s still a long way.”
How did your appointment as captain come about? “It was a choice made by Spalletti with the group, for me it’s really a pride to wear such an important captain’s armband. Every day I’m giving my all to prove myself up to this role”.
Would you have preferred not to interrupt the championship? “It was certainly an intense period, with lots of matches. It could be good to take a break for a moment and then leave again in January with even more desire. Clearly, in this break we all hoped to be at the World Cup, but that’s how it went. We left with great desire before of the European Championship and now we have to do the same thing. Reset everything, create a new group and a new environment.”
