Napoli relegated after derby, Juventus conclude with victory in Milan

Maintenance was the main issue of the last day in Italian Serie A, while the title of champions and European places were already awarded before this weekend. This season, the last three places in the standings are synonymous with descent, and there was one last name to be determined to accompany Lazio and Hellas Verona towards Serie B.

Three descents is one of the counterparts of the transition to professionalism in Serie A from next season. The first division will be reduced to ten teams for an elite which will therefore be tightened, while twelve teams made up Serie A so far.

Like Lazio, and Verona, Napoli quickly settled into the red zone, from the fall without managing to get out. However, on the eve of this last day, Napoli had its destiny in hand. A victory on Saturday, in the Campania derby against Pomigliano, ensured the maintenance of the Neapolitans. Any other result would lead to Napoli’s relegation.

Napoli stop halfway through maintenance

At the end of the first period, a step seemed to be taken in this direction, with Napoli leading the score, after the goal of Slovenian defender Lana Golob (28e) from a corner. Enterprising, Pomigliano must however wait for the hour of play before managing to concretize its opportunities. Tori Dellaperuta equalizes for his team (61e), on a ball cleverly slipped by Marija Banusic.

The Swedish striker then takes care of giving the advantage to Pomigliano, with a double for Banusic (65e et 70e) which definitely reverses the course of this meeting. With this victory (1-3), Pomigliano ensures its maintenance, while it was the last team to be still in danger before this weekend.

A time in the same position, Fiorentina had validated its maintenance last week by winning on the lawn of Pomigliano (0-1). Sarah Huchet’s teammates ended the season with a big victory (6-0) in another derby, that of Tuscany against Empoli. Valentina Giacinti and Daniela Sabatino scored twice in the game, helping Sabatino finish first in the scoring charts with 15 goals.

On the side of Rome, local rivalries were also on the program for the weekend, with a success of Roma, Saturday on the lawn of Lazio (0-3), consolidating the second place of the Louve club. Roma had taken the lead after only 38 seconds of play, on a goal from Milica Mijatovic, before gradually widening the gap through Valeria Pirone (28e) and Sophie Haug (65e).

See you in the final

At the top of the standings, and already assured of the title of champion, Juventus of Turin concluded its season with a victory on the lawn of AC Milan (1-2). The two teams found themselves in Serie A after their Italian Cup semi-final in recent weeks, dominated by Juve after a duel rich in goals (11-4 on all two matches).

Established for this meeting, French midfielder Annahita Zamanian opened the scoring for the Bianconere (30e). His strike escapes Laura Giulani, who can only slow the ball towards her goal. Juventus double the bet on the return from the locker room, Sofie Junge Pedersen at the conclusion, on a ball ideally deflected by Andrea Staskova (50e).

Milan will reduce the gap in additional time by Céleste Boureille (90 + 2), too late to hang a result in this part. In accounting terms, the two teams were fixed on their respective fates, Juventus on the top step, and Milan in third place on the podium.

The Bianconere now have another goal in mind with the Italian Cup final against Roma. A summit meeting between the first two teams in Serie A this season, which will be played on May 22 in Ferrara.

A victory to finish

In this top of the table, the positions remained unchanged at the end of this last day. And this in particular because of the victory (2-1) of Sassuolo (4e) against Inter Milan (5e). A positive note for Sassuolo who had a second half of the season complicated by injuries.

Among her players who sometimes missed, Haley Bugeja came on in the second half to score Sassuolo’s second goal (54e). Falling from the podium, Sassuolo bounced back to finish his season, finishing between the two Milanese clubs, Inter (5e) and AC Milan (3e).
