Napoli plan not to appear on Italian Super Cup if it takes place in Saudi Arabia. This was triggered because Israel and Hamas were heating up.
The 2023 Italian Supercoppa will use a new format. Four teams will compete in the event, namely Napoli, Lazio, Inter Milan and Fiorentina as participants.
This event will take place in Saudi Arabia on 21-25 January 2024. Napoli as Serie A champions will meet Fiorentina as Coppa Italia runners-up and Inter, last season’s defending Coppa Italia champions, will have to meet Lazio as Serie A runners-up.
Well, Napoli and Fiorentina are considering not taking part. One of the causes was the outbreak of the Israel vs Palestine war.
“Arab countries must organize themselves with respect for women and work. Sport must unite well-being and health, if this does not happen I have to worry,” said the Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiisquoted from Football Italia.
“Have you seen what is happening in Israel? Can you imagine the air blockade of the region? Did you know that with four planes we would carry 120 players worth their value?” he continued.
De Laurentiis hopes that the Italian Supercoppa will not take place outside Italy. According to him, the value of the prizes obtained is not commensurate with safety.
“You’re stupid! You’re doing all this just to get a few million (euro) more. Let’s do it at the Olimpico, why go and bother there? I’m not boycotting, I’m just saying,” he stressed.
