Naomi Osaka Opens Up About Balancing Motherhood and Tennis Career

Osaka Reveals I Thought My Career Was Over If I Had A Child (Provided by Tennis World UK)

Naomi Osaka has revealed that in the past she believed her professional tennis career would be over if she became pregnant. Osaka, 25, announced her pregnancy in January and gave birth to a girl named Shai last month.

The four-time Grand Slam champion won’t play a single tournament in 2023, but her goal is to return to action in Australia when the 2024 season begins. In recent months, Osaka has been enthusiastic about her comeback to tennis.

Just a few months ago, Osaka revealed her goal of winning at least eight more Grand Slams after returning from maternity leave. In addition, Osaka said in one of her interviews that she will be particularly motivated to play well for the sake of her daughter.

Osaka: I thought my career would be over if I had a child

“Actually, I felt a lot of pressure.

I’ve always had the assumption that your career is over when you have a child. I don’t see many women on the tennis tour who have kids. They are usually a bit older and it seems to be very taxing on the body.

I never really considered going back to the tour after having a kid. But I feel like it was a magical moment for me. It made me think about all the things I love and cherish and it really made me work hard.

I’ve been playing tennis since I was three years old and I want to appreciate the time I can still play. In my head I was wondering why guys who are younger than me or my age can have kids and just walk around like everything is fine.

That irritated me a lot because I was more successful than them. They didn’t have to deal with the repercussions that women deal with when they have to have a baby and that took some of the pressure off for me.” Osaka said on the Mountaintop Conversation podcast, loudly Sportskeeda.
