Nantes. Strike of January 31: 65,000 demonstrators according to the unions

After a first day of successful mobilization against the draft pension reformthe unions are once again calling for strike this Tuesday, January 31, 2023. A Nantes (Loire Atlantique), the demonstration will start from the water mirror, around 10:30 a.m. On January 19, between 25,000 and 40,000 people demonstrated in the streets of the city of the Dukes of Brittany.

Galvanized by the success of their first mobilization against the pension reform, the unions are calling for new massive demonstrations on Tuesday January 31, 2023, but the Prime Minister was firm on Sunday on the postponement of the retirement age which is not “more negotiable”.

The SNUiPP-FSU, the first primary school union, announced that half of the teachers will be mobilized on Tuesday.

The deputies began debating the text in committee since Monday before the reform is presented to the Hemicycle on February 6th.

2 p.m. – between 28,000 and 60,000 demonstrators in Nantes

The unions announce between 60,000 to 65,000 demonstrators in Nantes and 100,000 in the department of Loire Atlantique. The Loire-Atlantique prefecture estimates their number rather at 28 000.

1:10 p.m. – Part of the procession continues rue La Noue Bras de Fer

The demonstration split in two. A part stopped at the Nefs and another continues Rue La Noue Bras de Fer.

12:55 p.m. – The procession crosses the Anne de Bretagne bridge

The demonstrators cross the Anne de Bretagne bridge towards the naves on the island of Nantes. A woman knelt down facing the CRS.

12:48 p.m.- Throwing projectiles

The police block access to the Victor Schoelcher footbridge. Protesters chant: “Everyone hates the police” and throw projectiles on the police force.

12:30 p.m. – The procession cut in two

The procession continues to move forward and is now at the level of the Gloriette car park.

The head of the procession was cut off because of a police intervention against the black blocks according to a CGT union to the service of order.

12:17 p.m. – Protesters dressed in black

While less than a quarter of an hour ago Nantes news described a calm atmosphere similar to that of January 19, the situation seems to be suddenly tense.

Some protestors dressed in black and with gas masks appear in the procession. The other participants of the demonstration look at them with concern.

The demonstrators are numerous in Nantes. The firefighters are also part of the procession.

11:30 a.m. – The procession sets off

Yassin is 59 years old, soon to be 60. He will have to retire 9 months later than planned. He planned to go to Marseille with his wife in 2024 but that will not happen if the law passes. “Everything falls apart! »

There are more and more people at the water mirror near the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany. The procession has still not left.

10:45 a.m. – Several lines cut

According to Tanseveral lines are already cut.

10:30 am: Opening of the live

The demonstrators gathered at the water mirror as during the previous demonstration. They should follow the same course. It should start soon. The demonstrators continue to arrive.

What disturbances?

As on the first day of mobilization against the pension reform project, the transportation traffic in common will be disrupted in the city center.

Semitan has announced the cut of certain lines between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for tram line 1):

  • Line 1 of the tramway: cut between Commerce and Duchesse Anne,
  • Line 2 of the tramway: terminus at 50 Otages,
  • Line 3 of the tramway: cut between Commerce and Hôtel Dieu,
  • Line C1: cut between Copernic and Foch Cathedral,
  • Line C2: terminus at Talensac,
  • Line C3: cut between Copernic and Gare SNCF Sud,
  • Line C6: cut between Delorme and Foch Cathédrale,
  • Line 11: cut between Square Daviais and Foch Cathédrale,
  • Line 12: cut between Talensac and Foch Cathedral,
  • Line 23: cut between Copernic and Talensac,
  • Line 26: cut between Gaston Veil and Delorme,
  • Line 54: terminus at Delorme,
  • Airport shuttle: terminus at Hôtel Dieu.
