➡️ It sometimes happens that the city does not change only for the benefit of the richest. In the 14th arrondissement of Marseille, one of the poorest neighborhoods, located north of the city, a former Mac Donald’s has been transformed into a social center. Baptized “After M”, it was inaugurated this weekend. Instead of fast food, a solidarity project including a food bank, a place for training and professional integration, the distribution of hygiene kits, in a place where the poverty rate exceeds 40%.
➡️ Behind this spectacular transformation, the relentless struggle of its former employees who requisitioned the fast food which had been placed in compulsory liquidation, and the support of the inhabitants. 300,000 people have been fed in this place since the first confinement: food baskets were distributed free of charge at the “drive” of the sign. The idea is also to make the place a COVID screening center.
➡️ This symbolic rebirth project is unique in its kind, but it recalls many other solidarity initiatives about which we speak too little in the ocean of ambient gloom, from rescues of exiles in the Mediterranean to solidarity meals, for example L ‘Another Cantine in Nantes, which distributes tens of thousands of meals on a voluntary basis to people in need.
“The public authorities have abandoned us, salvation will come only from the inhabitants” explains a volunteer from “L’après M”: a horizon of self-organization put into practice. The world after is being invented now.
