The US would “pay the price,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying threatened in an opinion. She was reacting to the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives and the third most powerful politician in the US, to the Taiwanese capital Taipei. Their plane landed there on Tuesday to great applause from locals. For the first time in 25 years, such a high-ranking US politician is visiting the island state. According to Pelosi’s statement the American congressional delegation wanted to express their “unwavering support for Taiwan’s vibrant democracy”. At the same time, she has no wish to question the decades-old status quo of American attitudes toward China’s claim to Taiwan.
