Nancy. A solidarity fridge at the central market?

In the past, they were called gleaners. And it was common to see them roaming the markets at the time of dismantling, their back bent, gleaning unsold fruits, slightly overripe fruits, slightly wilted vegetables, unsold and unsaleable left behind by merchants in a hurry. But consumables.

An outdated image? Not necessarily. Because the period could lend itself to it… Alas. “The precariousness already existing in our society has only worsened with the Covid crisis”. Making the end of the month more difficult (when the beginnings are not already), and the cupboards very complicated to fill. Not to mention the fridges… The very ones that preoccupy Clara and her comrades Andréa, Julian and the others, actors of the association “Les Frigos Solidaires”.

This association in place since last year in Nancy has, as its name suggests, made the refrigerator the alpha and omega of its activity. The principle: convince a shopkeeper (or restaurant owner) to welcome (plug in and maintain) a fridge open to everyone on his doorstep. In other words, everyone can garnish (starting with the merchant in question) and from which everyone can draw. Without any other formality.

Missing 700 €

Since its creation, the Nancy branch of the association has already been able to set up two devices of this type: in front of the Le Vestiaire restaurant (139B Grande Rue), and most recently in front of the Bio C’Bon store (38 rue Saint-Georges) . And that’s just the beginning. Three other projects are already waiting in the pipes. Including one that only requires a little … solidarity to take off!

“It would be a question of setting up a fridge in the central market in Nancy”, confirms Clara. “We have already obtained the authorization to occupy the public domain, as well as the agreement of the traders. And a jackpot is underway. “On the Hello Asso platform, a call for contributions has been launched in order to raise the € 1,300 needed to finance the project, of which a little less than half has already been collected. So all you have to do is convince.

The choice of site is therefore a shocking argument: the central market. At the same time a high place of passage (for potential beneficiaries as well as donors), but where potentially waste can be rife. “However, market traders seem interested in a solution that would help them limit this waste,” points out Andréa. Making these refrigerators doubly virtuous devices: eco-friendly and generous.
