Namibia’s President Hage Geingob Dies at 82 After Battling Cancer

Namibia mourns the loss of President Hage Geingob, who passed away at the age of 82 while undergoing medical treatment in Windhoek, the country’s capital. A prominent figure in Namibia’s struggle for independence, Geingob had recently revealed his battle with cancer to the public. He passed away early on Sunday, surrounded by his wife and children, according to Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba.

A Distinguished Servant of the People

Vice-President Mbumba expressed the nation’s grief, stating that Namibia had lost “a distinguished servant of the people.” Geingob’s contributions to the country’s fight for independence and his subsequent leadership were widely recognized and respected. As per the constitution, Mbumba will now assume the role of president for the remaining duration of Geingob’s second term in office.

Presidential Elections and Condolences

With presidential and parliamentary elections already scheduled for November, Namibia faces a significant transition in leadership. Leaders from around the world have sent their condolences, recognizing Geingob’s impact on the nation. Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of neighboring South Africa, described Geingob as a “towering veteran of Namibia’s liberation from colonialism and apartheid.”

A Life Dedicated to Service

Hage Geingob was a towering figure in Namibian politics, known for his deep, gravelly voice and commanding presence. He was a long-serving member of the Swapo party, which led the movement against apartheid South Africa’s control over Namibia. Geingob spent 27 years in exile, residing in Botswana, the United States, and the United Kingdom, where he pursued a PhD in politics.

Returning to Namibia in 1989, just a year before the country gained independence, Geingob played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future. In 2020, he reflected on his journey, stating, “Looking back, the journey of building a new Namibia has been worthwhile.” Geingob acknowledged the progress made in developing the country but emphasized the need for continued efforts to build an inclusive society.

A Legacy of Leadership

Geingob became president in 2015 and was serving his second and final term in office. Prior to his presidency, he held the position of prime minister for a total of 12 years, making him the country’s longest-serving prime minister. Geingob’s tenure was marked by his commitment to advancing Namibia’s development and addressing social inequalities.

As the ruling Swapo party prepares for the upcoming elections, they have chosen Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as their presidential candidate. If elected, Nandi-Ndaitwah will become Namibia’s first female president, marking a historic moment for the country.

Namibia bids farewell to President Hage Geingob, a leader who dedicated his life to the service of his people. His contributions to the nation’s independence and subsequent leadership will be remembered as Namibia moves forward into a new era.
