Specialists American National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) toldthat a smooth, thickened, and reddened tongue could be a sign of vitamin B12 deficiency, which increases the risk of pernicious anemia.

It is emphasized that the body needs vitamin B12 for the production of healthy red blood cells and the normal functioning of the nervous system. A deficiency in this nutrient can damage nerves and cause tingling and numbness in the arms and legs, muscle weakness, and loss of reflexes.

“You may feel unsteady, lose balance and have trouble walking. A deficiency in vitamin B12 can weaken bones and can lead to hip fractures,” the NHLBI website says.

Severe vitamin B12 deficiency can cause neurological problems such as confusion, dementia, depression, and memory loss, experts say. Other symptoms are related to the digestive tract: nausea and vomiting, heartburn, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, and loss of appetite and weight. Experts advise seeking medical attention if symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency appear.

It is clarified that foods such as beef, liver, poultry and fish, eggs, milk, yogurt, and cheese are high in this nutrient.

Pernicious anemia is a disease caused by impaired blood formation due to a lack of vitamin B12 in the body. Bone marrow and tissues of the nervous system are especially sensitive to the deficiency of this vitamin.
